The United Nations in Lesotho and the Government of Lesotho sign the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2024- 2028)
The United Nations System in Lesotho and the Government of Lesotho have signed the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2024-2028,
underscoring their joint commitment to advancing sustainable development in Lesotho. This partnership marks a significant milestone in their collaboration. The signing ceremony was attended by the Right Honorable Prime Minister of Lesotho, Sam Matekane, Cabinet Ministers, development partners, private sector representatives, civil society organizations, religious and traditional leaders, youth and women groups. The CF document was jointly signed by the Prime Minister and the UN Resident Coordinator. “We want to restore the country's dignity, reignite patriotism and the energy of our people, we thank the United Nations in Lesotho for consistently walking this journey with us,” remarked the Prime Minister. The UNSDCF, covering the years 2024-2028, is a strategic framework designed to support Lesotho's development goals as outlined in the revised National Strategic Development Plan. Developed through extensive consultations with stakeholders, it represents a collective vision to address the nation's challenges and opportunities. The CF aims to ensure no one is left behind and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 by leveraging domestic and international resources.
This comprehensive framework brings together eight Resident UN Agencies, Funds, and Programs, as well as fifteen Non-Resident Agencies, to collaborate on Lesotho's development priorities. The development of the UNSDCF involved the Government of Lesotho and key stakeholders through an inclusive and collaborative process. It drew upon the Common Country Analysis, stakeholder
prioritization exercises, and participatory processes to inform its content. "The CF reflects our determination to leave no one behind and promote sustainable development. It emphasizes multi-stakeholder partnerships, innovative solutions, and the integration of human rights, gender equality, and environmental sustainability," said UN Resident Coordinator, Amanda Khozi Mukwashi, at the launch.
The UNSDCF will contribute to Lesotho's National Strategic Development Plan II through UN interventions in three priority areas: 1. Good Governance and Social Equity: Promoting inclusive governance, social equity, and strong institutions for sustainable and equitable development. 2. Equitable Food Systems, Environmental Sustainability, and Climate Action: Supporting sustainable food systems, addressing environmental challenges, and promoting climate action for a greener future. 3. People's Well-being and Economic Development: Improving well-being, fostering inclusive economic growth, and ensuring access to quality essential services. The Cooperation Framework is estimated to contribute US$331,111,495 over five years. The United Nations Lesotho expresses gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the development of the CF and looks forward to driving positive change and building a prosperous and sustainable future for Lesotho.
