UNICEFREQUEST FOR PROPOSALS: ESTABLISHMENT OF AN EDUCATIONAL RADIO STATION FOR THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING (MOET) THROUGH THE LESOTHO DISTANCE TEACHING CENTRE (LDTC)
BACKGROUND
The Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) of 2018 indicates that 51.5% of households in Lesotho have a radio. Radio is one of the most affordable electronic media to broadcast and receive information, hence it is an
appropriate platform to engage learners on continuing education especially those from marginalised communities. The Lesotho Distance Teaching College (LDTC) is an open and distance learning institution of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) which is charged with the responsibility to provide open access to education in Lesotho. As part of its commitment to innovation and enhancing educational delivery, LDTC aims to establish an
educational radio station with a view to facilitating learning and engagement among learners and the wider community. The radio station will serve as a platform to deliver educational content, offer teacher support, and provide community education programs. It is generally accepted that distance learning plays a pivotal role in improving quality and equity of education.
A key focus of this initiative is to support learners who have dropped out of the formal education system. The educational radio station will provide these learners with access to quality educational content, enabling them to continue their studies and improve their knowledge and skills. By offering flexible learning opportunities through radio broadcasts, LDTC aims to reintegrate these learners into the education system and help them achieve their academic and personal goals.
Additionally, the radio station will play a crucial role in disseminating information on education policies, reforms, and initiatives. This will ensure that educators, students, and the general public are well-informed about the latest developments in the education sector. By providing a reliable source of information, the radio station will help foster a more informed and engaged community, contributing to the overall improvement of the education system in Lesotho.
