Governance and Institutions

The UN system focuses on good governance through strengthening democratic institutions, electoral support, human rights, peace building, gender equality and evidence-based approaches to governance challenges. The United Nations remains committed to sustainable peace and security in Lesotho. Progress continues toward public-sector reform and decentralization of services. The major UN contribution to developing the capacities of local authorities sets the foundation to deliver better-quality, more-accessible services to the Basotho society by 2017.

The UN Family has contributed to the development and improvement of national and local governance structures through convening the first-ever High-Level Roundtable as a platform for dialogue, development of a Governance Issues Paper. The High-Level workshops are part of an overall strategy of accelerating service delivery and enhancing leadership through inclusive reform, improved legislative and policy environment for decentralization resulting in increased transfer of functions from central to local governments, and other capacity building measures such as foresight and scenario building initiatives.
