The commemoration ceremony of UN Day in Lesotho took place under the global theme “Stand Up for Human Rights” bringing youth voices and perspectives.
The United Nations Day is celebrated to commemorate the founding of the organization in 1945 and acknowledge the promotion of human rights, commend social progress and world peace. This year the UN in Lesotho celebrates the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, in Resolution 217 A (III) on the 10th of December 1948.
Motivated by the experiences of the preceding world wars, the Universal Declaration was the first time that countries agreed on a comprehensive statement of inalienable human rights. The General Assembly proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a common standard of achievement for all nations and peoples. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was a landmark event in this context. It is the foundation document for joint efforts to promote human rights and equality for all, as well as sustainable development.
During the UN Day today two global competitions were launched: A competition for the Media on a best feature in the stated theme and a Drawing Competition among Children aged 10-14 years.
