Sector Workshops on SDGs Implementation
Sensitization Workshop that is aimed at sensitizing stakeholders about the global goals.
The United Nations system in Lesotho is convening a three-day Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Sensitization Workshop that is aimed at sensitizing stakeholders about the global goals, as well as reflecting on prioritization and localization of the 17 SDGs for Lesotho.
The workshop is a participatory event in which members of the Private Sector, Civil Society, Academia, as well as Youth and Media will identify the development goals that are most relevant to them, and also have an opportunity to deliberate and provide feedback on how they can contribute towards the implementation of the SDGs
Like the rest of the United Nations Member States, Lesotho, in September 2015 adopted the SDGs which comprise of 17 goals and 169 targets. The SDGs which came into effect in January 2016, build on the success and lessons learnt from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The SDGs are a result of extensive consultations and deliberations around the world with various stakeholders and Member States. They are aimed at ending extreme poverty, fighting inequality and injustice and protecting planet earth.
Government all over the world are taking the lead in domesticating and implementing the SDGs, however, given the scope and magnitude of this new development agenda, governments acting alone will not be able to achieve the stated targets. The involvement and active support of various stakeholders that include private sector, academia, civil society, youth and media is essential in the attainment of the SDGs.
The workshop also comes at a time when Lesotho is working on its new National Strategic Development Plan and also reviewing its Vision 2020. Integrating the SDGs, as well as other regional and global agendas into the new NSDP remain critical to facilitate implementation and the development agenda in Lesotho.
The UN system in Lesotho is committed to supporting the Government and all stakeholders in rolling out the SDGs to improve the lives, well-being, and human development of all Basotho.
The sensitization workshop are taking place starting Wednesday, June 28 until Friday, June 30 at Maseru, Avani.
