Journalists in Lesotho gathered at the United Nations in Maseru on Monday for a half day workshop on reporting gender based violence.
Officiating the meeting, the Officer in Charge for the United Nations Population Fund in Lesotho Ms Roselidah Ondeko called upon the journalist to break the silence on gender based violence.
“You are very powerful in fighting gender based violence because you not only report on society but you help shape public opinion and perceptions,” she said.
She also reaffirmed UNFPA’s commitment to working with Journalists to create awareness on issues of gender based violence.
Three days earlier, a precursor meeting with editors introducing this subject matter took place. Ms Ondeko called upon Editors in Lesotho to be mindful of the language used around rape and sexual assault as it goes a long way to perpetuate mythologies and can lead to 'reverse criminalization,' where the women who are victims end up being blamed for the attacks.
