While African countries have responded decisively to the pandemic, and the numbers of cases and deaths are for now relatively low, the magnitude of the challenge and the continent’s underlying vulnerabilities cannot be underplayed. As of 18 May 2020, the virus had infected 4.6 million people and claimed 311,847 lives worldwide.
